Abstract

Background

Stroke is a worldwide health problem. It is the second most common cause of death accounting for 6.4 million death every year and the primary cause of long term disability

Objectives

To evaluate the effectiveness of the NRI on functional disability among patients with stroke in experimental group. To evaluate the effectiveness of the NRI on functional disability among patients with stroke in control group. To find out the association between pretest levels of functional disability among patients with stroke in experimental group with selected demographic variables. To find out the association between pretest levels of functional disability among patients with stroke in control group with selected demographic variables

Design

True experimental pre-test post test design with optional repeated follow up design was adopted for the study

Settings

Palaniyandi Sarojini Medical Trust Hospital at Thalakulam, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu

Participants

120 stroke patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by using simple random sampling technique

Methods

A pretest was carried out by collecting the socio demographic and clinical data of the stroke patient and disability rating scale was assessed with in first week duration. From the second week to sixth week neurological rehabilitation intervention was given and again posttest was conducted in the seventh week, ninth week and eleventh week. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics

Results

The pretest mean function disability score was 9.96 it was apparently greater than the posttest score, which was 4.26. The overall functional disability of the stroke patient has reduced to 5.70% which indicates the effectiveness of neurological rehabilitation

Conclusion

There was a marked improvement found in the overall functional disability and it has improved after neurological rehabilitation intervention. The published work is a part of the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University.
