Abstract

Recent reports in the news papers and sociological journals bring dismay pictures of the increasing adolescent suicide in India, especially in Kerala. Most of the children are living in the stressful situation which is the untreated cause of academic failure in our schools. So they cannot perform their daily living in a successful way and they can't concentrate in their studies. Yoga is one of the alternative therapies to relieve stress and improve concentration.

Objective

The objective of the study was to find out the effectiveness of yoga therapy on stress and concentration among students.

Methodology

The conceptual frame work of the study was based on general system model of Ludwig Von Bertalanffy [1968]. A quantitative approach was used with true experimental design. Simple random sampling via lottery method was adopted in this study. The tool consisted of Perceived Stress Scale and Study Skill Inventory. Yoga therapy was administered to experimental group for a period of 30 days while the control group was set free to adopt their original life style. The pilot study was conducted among 6 students in December. The main study was conducted from January 1st to February 8th. Sample size was 60. The obtained data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Result

The analysis by independent ‘t’ test showed that in the stress, calculated ‘t’ value was (2.64) greater than ‘t’ table value (2.00) at 0.05 level of significance and in the concentration, calculated ‘t’ value was (5.93) greater than ‘t’ table value (2.00) at 0.05 level of significance. It also stated that there was no association between stress and concentration with the selected demographic variables.

Conclusion

Yoga therapy was an effective intervention for improving concentration and reducing stress of students of any age group.
