A Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Core Competencies in Nursing among Nursing staff Working At Selected Hospitals In Bengaluru with a view to provide information booklet

Abstract

Background and Objectives

Knowledge and practice of core competencies in nursing field is very essential for staff nurses to provide safe, ethical and quality care to the patients. As there is need for creating greater awareness among staff nurses regarding the importance of core competencies in nursing practice, the present study was undertaken to assess the existing knowledge of core competencies in nursing and to find the association between knowledge and demographic variable of the respondents. An information booklet was developed to help staff nurses to improve knowledge of core competencies in nursing practice.

Objectives

To assess the knowledge of staff nurses on core competencies in nursing. To find the association between knowledge with selected demographic variables. To provide an information booklet to improve core competencies in nursing practice.

Method

The study design was descriptive survey design. Simple Random sampling technique was used to draw 80 staff nurses as samples. Data was collected by self-administered questionnaire method.

Results

The findings showed that the mean knowledge score of the subjects which was 59.5 percent was found to be significant with a calculated ‘t ’value of 3.46*, P<0.05. Association between mean knowledge score and selected variables like age, gender, religion, experience, educational qualification, additional nursing qualification and In-service education programme.

Interpretation and conclusion

The data was analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study indicated that staff nurses do have moderate knowledge level on core competencies in nursing. This assessment project has helped the investigator to develop an information booklet to improve core competencies in nursing practice.
