Abstract

New genus Garreta was created by Janssens (1940) with 19 species, including seven from India, carving out of old genus Gymnopleurus Illiger. One new species, Garreta sylvestris, has been reported from the forest areas (Sonti and Seonsar) of Haryana around Kurukshetra. A synoptic key of all the eight species now known from India has been provided diagnosing the new species from other allied species, particularly opacus and dejeanii. The new species rather large in size, in comparison to other gymnopleurids in the area, and of euryphagous nature, was found restricted to forest areas only and never recorded from open grassland areas of the region.
