Improved survival of Malabar puffer fish, Carinotetraodon travancoricus (Hora and Nair, 1941) in planted aquaria
Abstract
The Malabar Puffer fish, Carinotetraodon travancoricus commands good demand in ornamental fish trade in India. A study was conducted to evaluate the compatibility and survival of C. travancoricus with two aquatic plants, Cabomba and Ceratophyllum. The experiments were carried out in small rectangular glass tanks in which the plants were planted at distances of 3, 5 and 7.5 cm respectively in treatments T1, T2 and T3. The results revealed improved adaptation and survival with Cabomba plants in contrast to Ceratophyllum. Furthermore, planting Cabomba at 5cm and 7.5cm distances yielded higher survival rates (54.58±34.94 and 52.91± 37.24 respectively).
