Abstract

This paper gives the historical background of automation and discuses its relevance in library operations particularly in the digital age. It highlights the procedures and criteria for the choice of software used in automating Adekunle Ajasin University Library. The paper also enunciates lucidly each module in the software of choice which is strategic library automation and software (SLAM). It highlights the features of SLAM and discusses the process of retrospective conversion of catalogue records. The paper concludes with precautions libraries need to take in automation and raises some suggestions that will help university libraries and university administrations.
