Associate Professor,
During the 6th century B.C Kashi (ancient name) occupied an eminent position among the other states of 16 Mahajanpada. Kashi has not only witnessed the Sramana tradition but also produced many followers of this great tradition and has an unbroken tradition of sacredness. Ancient settlements from Varanasi have been revealed from so many sites. Here in this research article I would like to throw light on the cultures, which have been identified from Varanasi region. These important archaeological sites are-Kashi-Rajghat, Sarai Mohana, Tilmanpur, Kotwa, Asapur, Akhta, Ramnagar, Anai, etc. The boundaries of this city extended up to the Assi River. It could also be ascertained that the settlement of ancient Varanasi was surrounded by dense concentrations of supporting settlements.
