Demounting is a rescue step in reusing the slide to provide case details in case it is the only representative slide or in case there is air entrapment. Xylene is the most common demountant used in histopathology. Xylene is considered as a hazardous substance as it presents with various health and environmental problems. The liquid dish wash soap is a mixture of surfactants composed of sodium laureth sulfate, sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate, cocamidopropyl betaine and nonionic surfactants. In this study there was an attempt to replace xylene with a dish wash soap liquid for demounting of slides mounted with DPX.
This study aimed to find a less toxic and cheaper substitute for xylene as a demountant.
Two sets of slides which were mounted with DPX at different weeks and years (1 week, 2weeks, 3 weeks, 4weeks, 5 weeks, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year were taken for this study. One set was put in Xylene and the other set in different concentrations of commercially available limonene based detergent 10%, 20% and 30%. Data was analyzed by Students unpaired t test.
Slides which were mounted with DPX within 5 weeks were demounted by Vim. The slides were demounted faster with Xylene than with Vim.
Vim can be used as a better alternative to Xylene until 5 weeks of mounting with DPX.
