Department of Sociology, DSB Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India

Abstract

Traditional knowledge is local knowledge unique to a given culture or society; it contrasts with the international knowledge system generated by universities, research institutions and private firms. Traditionalknowledge systems have been found to contribute to sustainability in diverse fields, such as biodiversity conservation and maintenance of ecosystem services, tropical, ecological and biocultural restoration, sustainable water management, genetic resource conservation and management of other natural resources. This research paper focuses on the traditional knowledge of the people of the Himalayan region and their role to encourage the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable development of this region.
