Syzygium cumini Linn. (Jamun) is a multipurpose tree of family Myrtaceae having considerable nutritional and medicinal properties. It is used world wide in treatment of diabetes. Despite of its diverse medicinal properties no molecular data is available about the pattern of variation in its natural range. In the present study, 9 genotypes of S. cumini population collected from different parts of India were analyzed for diversity at molecular levels. A total of 129 amplification products were scored using 10 polymorphic primers with an average of 12.90 bands per primer. The polymorphic information content (PIC) of the primers varied in the range of 0.28-0.86 with an average PIC of 0.63. The phenetic dendrogram generated by UPGMA analysis grouped accessions into four clusters. UPGMA based cluster analysis showed no region specific clustering. Nevertheless, data analysis shows thatp RAPD methods are quite informative about the genetic and ecological diversity of S. cumini. Secondly, present diversity profile helps herbal drug manufactures for selecting correct raw material for jamun based herbal drugs. Further our study provides a population level genetic profile that could be further correlate with ecogeographical factors for further investigations.
