Abstract

Methanolic extract of fruits of Spondias pinnata Kurz. (Anacardiaceae) was partitioned sequentially with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform and butanol. The chloroform fraction possessed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphyllococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Fractionation of the bioactive chloroform extract afforded SP1 as the major bioactive compound showing activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. However, it did not show activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae. On the basis of IR, HRFABMS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopic data, the structure of the compound was determined to be ‘3 â-hydroxyolea-12-en-28-oic acid’ commonly known as ‘oleanolic acid’.
