Comparison of heavy metal concentration in various Laterite profiles in Kanyakumari district

Department of Chemistry, Sree Devi Kumari Women's College, Kuzhithurai

Abstract

Laterite soil samples from five stations in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu were selected for the study. The samples collected during October 2014 to september2015 were used for the analysis of heavy metals. The range of various parameters in the soil were analyzed by suitable methods. In case of the heavy metals the range in concentration were: Cu 0.43–25.65 mg/kg, Cr 1.83–38.47 mg/kg, Zn 52.07–96.76 mg/kg and Co 4.8–21.08 mg/kg. The trace metal abundance in the study area was in the order Zn>Cr>Cu>Co and their concentrations were well within the safer limit. The concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cr, Co were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy.
