A study on quality of work life of university teachers

Abstract

Higher education is crucial to the development of human resources of any country. It transforms human resources into human capital. The aim of higher education is to provide qualified skilled professionals to the industry. The universities being provider of higher education should impart relevant, accessible education in cost effective manner. Performance of university depends upon teachers. Teachers play multiple roles as a teacher, researcher and counselor. They also plan, organize and execute many activities like seminars, conferences, placements etc. Teachers' job involvement and organizational commitment can go a long way in achieving goals of the university. Thus the Quality of Work Life (QWL) of teachers is very significant. Present study is being conducted in five selected universities located in North West region of India with the objective to identify the overall level of QWL of a cross section of faculty members in universities and to find out the relationship between certain demographic variables and the levels of overall QWL. Findings of the present study reveal that there is no significant difference in the level of QWL among the various age categories, teaching subject and gender. However, there are significant differences in the level of QWL among the respondents classified on the basis of their designation, experience and university.
