Circular economy for textile and apparel industry Dr Sharma Shipra Associate Professor, NIFT, Kangra (Himachal Pradesh), India Online published on 30 May, 2021. Abstract The textile and clothing industry is one of the most resource-intensive industries on this earth amounting to US $3 trillion in terms of value. Clothing as an industry represents more than 60% of the total textile industry and in the last few years, there is a double fold increase in the clothing production owing to rising purchasing powers and consumerism globally. Fast fashion has led to an increase in carbon footprints and has endangered the sustenance of natural resources in the near future. The concept of the circular economy pushes the idea of a closed system of an economy wherein the raw material, the varied components, and the resulting products lose their value with renewable energy. The current stage of the circular economy now seeks to move beyond the overgrowing linear fashion model where raw material ends up as a waste matter. Circular economy, this, aims at resource repurposing, drastic waste reduction, refurbishment and sustainable solutions. A circular economy would help in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, Environment conservation, Decreased processing costs due to waste elimination, resource reutilization, and lesser depletion of natural reserves.
