Online published on 21 August, 2014. Abstract The Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector plays a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of the country. It is estimated that in terms of value, the sector accounts for about 45% of the manufacturing output and around 40% of the total export of the country. The advantage of high literacy rate and good socio economic status in Kerala give large opportunity to these type of units to develop and grow. Literature suggests that these sectors are one of the major contributors of employment in almost all developing countries. This paper is an outcome of a study conducted to understand the functioning of MSMEs and the study was carried out in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. As a part of descriptive study, primary data were collected from 200 owners of MSMEs using a self developed schedule and data has been analysed with the help of percentage. The study found that in spite of its importance, the sector face numerous problems like difficulty in getting raw materials and difficulty in obtaining goods from supplier.
