Impacts of climate changes on aquaculture Dr. Nayak Nitin Director, BVIMR(Bharati Vidyapeeth University), A-4 Paschim Vihar, New Delhi-63 Online published on 4 September, 2013. Abstract Aquaculture is the fresh or salt water farming of any fish, shellfish, or aquatic plant. Aquaculture practiced for thousands of years, especially in places like China, Norway, British Columbia, where it has provided a solid supply of protein for people. Aquaculture is currently playing, and will continue to play, a big part in boosting global fish production and in meeting the rising demand for fishery products. From this cursory examination of the onset of climate change and its impact on the aquaculture industry, one could deduce that the biggest need for mitigation is information and knowledge to allow for advanced planning. It would be expected that future facilities will be larger, more robust, more independent of the environment and operationally more efficient. The industry should in general be able to adapt to changing conditions by technological and biological advances and possibly by relocation. Increased opportunities may present themselves to the industry with a warmer climate. Top Keywords Aquaculture, water, climate, opportunities. Top | |
