Abstract

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation rates have been rising, and the total volume of global MSW generated has increased significantly. It is anticipated that the per-day generation of MSW will increase by about 1.75 times by the year 2025. A considerable fraction of MSW is made up of plastic waste. Population increases and the ongoing usage of plastic in disposable consumer goods are expected to result in ever-rising plastic waste amounts. Plastic waste has become a challenging problem around the world nowadays. Kanpur (north India), the 11th most populated city, generates a significant amount of MSW, which consists of a sizable proportion of plastic waste, with more than 4 million people. Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) is running an MSW plant with a capacity of handling 1500 metric tons per day (MTD). The municipal waste generated by the city consists of 5-10% plastic waste. In this study, an effort has been made to highlight the various methods and technologies adopted by KMC to dispose of such a huge amount of MSW in the city. After the year 2019, KMC has been handling the MSW under its ownership and performing well in the disposal stage of management. Installation of plastic in diesel plants and its execution are innovative techniques to manage the plastic proportion of MSW. The produced biodiesel is cheaper than commercially available diesel, and this process helps reduce the MSW load at the plant.
