Abstract

Plagiarism is one of the major causes of academic and research failures. The repercussions of such types of acts are many—the retraction of publications, the deregistration of academic courses, the cancellation of promotions and the loss of jobs. The study discussed in this article was aimed to showcase the latest research on plagiarism, trending current news on plagiarism, and global statistics on plagiarism. These statistics, originally provided by ‘Plagiarism checkerx’ on their website, illustrate the global standing of countries based on the percentage of the text similarity. The study conducted a systematic literature review, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach to showcase the diverse perspectives of authors on plagiarism. TheProQuest (Library and Information Science Abstracts) database and other sources, such as journals, identified 164 articles. However, only 38 met the study’s criteria. It showed knowledge about plagiarism, academic integrity, the reasons for plagiarism, its effects, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) content detectors and anti-plagiarism detectors, and the role of teachers and librarians in stopping plagiarism. The study’s findings have unveiled the current news on plagiarism across the globe, including recent research studies that focus on plagiarism and the global position of countries regarding the similarity of text.
