Abstract

Yellow Stem Borers and leaffolders are two groups of lepidopteron pests that cause severe damage to rice in many areas of the world. In this study effort for development of inbuilt resistance was done through transgenesis breeding of Bt gene (mCry1Ac) expressing in Swarna and MTU1010 rice background were assessed on basis of amount of Cry protein production and insect bioassay. Selected mCry1Ac transgenic lines of Swarna and MTU1010, having Cry protein ranged from 0.580 to 0.981 μg/g and 0.596 to 0.924 μg/g respectively, leaf fresh weight were evaluated for resistance against manual infestation of freshly hatched neonate larvae of YSB and LF collected from stem borer infested area in central India. 16 out of 22 Bt-lines for YSB and 15 out of 22 Bt-lines for LF were identified showing 90–100% mortality of larvae, within 4-days of infestation in cut-stem assays.
