Abstract

This study was conducted in Barabanki district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh following purposive random sampling technique. 200 sample farmers (100 from lower strata and 100 from upper strata) were selected and interviewed for collection of data. Sample farmers were categorized as marginal, small and medium size of farms. Cobb-Douglas production function was applied to analyse the data and interpretation of the result. Production of mentha was characterized by decreasing returns to scale. Five variables namely human labour, seed, manure and fertilizer, irrigation charges and distillation charges were considered to work out the resource use efficiency. These factors altogether contributed 81.969, 86.094 and 93.413 per cent, in upper strata and 90.766, 88.106 and 92.762 per cent, in lower strata respectively. These factors had positive role in production of mentha on all size groups of farms. The value of M.V.P. to factor costs was found positive indicating that, there is further scope to increase the investment on these factors to realize return more than the cost.
