Abstract The field experiment was carried out at MARS, Dharwad during Kharif, 2010–2011 to study the "Extension of cotton growth under organic production system". The results of the experiment revealed that combined application of organic manures are compost (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF recorded significantly higher kapas yield at first and second picking and total kaps yield (1436) and was superior over other organic manurial treatments but was on par with crop residue (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF. In second picking combined application of compost (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF recorded significantly higher kapas yield (818 kg ha−1) over other treatments but was on par with application of crop residue (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF (1393 kg ha−1). In recommended practices integrated application of FYM @ 5t ha−1 + RDF recorded significantly higher kapas yield (915 kg ha−1) in first picking and total kapas yield (1701 kg ha−1) over rest of the treatments. Among the green manuring treatments, application of gliricidia green leaf manures (GLM) @ 7.5t per ha as mulch with jeevamrutha @ 500l/ha at sowing, 30, 60 and 90 DAS as a surface application recorded significantly higher kapas yield in first (697 kg ha−1), second picking (867 kg ha−1) and total kapas yield (1478 kg ha−1) over other green manuring treatments and was on par with lucerne + jeevamrutha. Interaction effect of organic manures and green manuring was did not significantly influenced on growth, yield and yield components. In second picking, combined application of crop residue (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF + gliricidia + jeevamrutha @ 500l ha−1 recorded significantly higher kapas yield (926 kg ha−1) as compared to RDF alone and RDF + FYM (560 and 700 kg ha−1, respectively) but was on par with application of compost (50%) + vermicompost (50%) equivalent to RDF + gliricidia green leaf manuring as mulch + jeevamrutha @ 500 l ha−1 (915 kg ha−1) In recommended practices combined application of RDF + FYM @ 5t ha−1 + gliricidia green leaf manure as mulch with application of jeevamrutha @ 500l ha−1 recorded significantly higher kapas yield in first (960 kg ha−1), second picking (861 kg ha−1) and total kapas yield (1777 kg ha−1) over other treatments and on par with RDF + FYM @ 5t ha−1 + lucerne + jeevamrutha @ 500l ha−1 and control (C1-RDF + FYM).
