Online published on 13 January, 2016. Abstract Solanum melongena L. is an important vegetable crop widely consumed in all continents. Fifty six entries comprising forty five hybrids, and ten parents along with one standard hybrid ABH-1 as check were evaluated in three seasons for DUS and character inheritance pattern. Study of qualitative characters depicted dominance of purple flower over white; presence or absence of spines on leaves, calyx and stem, monogenic or pleiotropic in action; elongated (ellipsoid and cylindrical) fruit shape dominant over round (globular, ovoid and obovate) fruit shape and round shape dominant over oval (pear and club shaped) fruit shape; purple calyx colour dominant over green and fruit colour ranging from white purple to dark purple showing quantitative nature of gene expression.
