The study was based on secondary data for the period of 23 years (1984–85 to 2006–07) for the districts viz., Buldana, Yavatmal, Akola, Amravati and Amravati divisionas a whole of Western Vidarbha of Maharashtra. The compound growth rates were negative for all the districts and also the division as a whole for area under jowar cultivation. However, the highest compound growth rate was recorded in Buldhana district (9.59 per cent per annum) significant at one per cent level. The compound growth rates for area and production of jowar were recorded near about equal it may be due tothe compound growth rates of productivity were less than or equal to one per cent per annum for almost all district except Akola district. The coefficient of variation and Coppock's instability index with regards to botharea (8.43 and 10.47 per cent) and productivity (20.29 and 12.40 per cent) were lowest in Yavatmal district among the jowar growing districts of Amravati division. At overall period, the area effect was most stronger factor for increasing production of jowar in all the districts and division as a whole, except Akola district i.e. -305.22 per cent.
