Online published on 3 April, 2013. Abstract The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of ethanol extract of Cissus repens Lan against experimentally induced gastric ulcers. It is evaluated for its anti-ulcer activity against aspirin plus pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcer (antisecretory), HCl–ethanol induced ulcer (cytoprotective) and water immersion stress induced ulcer in rats. We found that Cissus repens Lan extract at a dose of 300 mg/kg p.o. markedly decrease the incidence of ulcers in all the three models. Ethanol extract of Cissus repens Lan showed significant reduction in gastric volume, free acidity, total acidity and ulcer index. The plant extract also showed gastro protective activity (49.65%), whereas standard drug sucralfate showed 90.49%. Cissus repens Lan extract showed protection index 39.0% in water immersion stress induced ulcer, whereas standard drug omeprazole showed protection index 98%.
