Abstract

Mainstream medicine is increasingly receptive to the use of antimicrobials and other drugs derived from plants, as traditional antibiotics become ineffective in a short span of time. A total of 165 extracts from 64 plants collected from Northern part of India were screened for their qualitative and quantitative antimicrobial properties against eleven bacterial strains. The ethanolic extracts of Bauhinia purpurea, Buddleza paniculata, Cassia fistula, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Lawsonia innermis, Mallotus philippinensis, Mimuspos elengi, Punica granatum, Plumbago zeylanica and Rubus ellipticus exhibited antibacterial activity. Extracts of Buddleza paniculata, Anethum graveolens, Dioscorea bulbifera, Myrtus communis, Plumbago zeylanica, Rheum moorcroftianum and Eclipta alba showed activity against MRSA. Ethanolic extracts were found to be more bioactive than the aqueous extracts.
