Abstract

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is consumed generally for its flavor content as well as for its nutritive value. Mulching is recognized as one of the most beneficial intercultural practices in strawberry for improving yield as well as quality. Coloured PVC films like red, violet, grey, green and brown are reported to be better than black polyethylene mulch. The study was conducted over a period of three years to see the effect of different polyethylene mulches on the growth performance of strawberry under Lucknow conditions. The experiment was laid out in RBD having 7 treatment combinations of different mulches and replicated four times. Results revealed that strawberry performed best for most of the physico-chemical parameters recorded under treatment T5 (yellow polyethylene mulch) and T3 (black polyethylene mulch) followed by T4 (white polyethylene mulch), T2 (green shade net mulch), T6 (transparent polyethylene mulch), T7 (dry grass mulch) and T1 (control). Prospects of strawberry are improving steadily since it has high commercial value and yield returns in a short time of six months. Thus, cultivation of strawberry even under Lucknow condition is gaining momentum. Chandler variety has been found to perform well in the region.
