Abstract

Twenty-six diverse onion advance lines selected among more than four hundred germplasms evaluated at this centre along with two checks Agrifound Light Red and Agrifound White to study the interrelationship and path coefficient on yield attributing factors in onion. In most of the cases, genotypic correlation coefficients were higher than phenotypic correlation coefficients, it is suggested that there was inherent association among the traits but the environment minimized the phenotypic association. Marketable yield was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, bulb diameter, bulb size index, weight of 20 bulbs and gross yield and negatively correlated with bolters at both genotypic and phenotypic level. From the path coefficient analysis, the data revealed that at genotypic level most of the traits except leaves per plant, neck thickness, bulb diameter, bolters, days for bulb initiation, days for harvesting showed a positive direct effect on yield. The gross yield had the maximum positive direct effect followed by weight of 20 bulbs, bulb size index and dry matter content and at phenotypic level, the gross yield and weight of 20 bulbs produced higher positive direct effect on yield. Thus the result inferred that one should lay emphasis on gross yield, weight of 20 bulbs, bulb size index and plant height for making direct selection for improvement of bulb yield in onion crop.
