Horticultural research and development in Korea: A review Choi Geun-Won, Lee Jung-Myung Kyung Hee University, Yongin City, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea Email: cwon@khu.ac.kr Abstract Korea is a peninsula located in Asian continent having more than 3000 islands. Korea covers 222145 km2 in which South Korea covers about 45 per cent (99500 km2) of the territory. Korea tends to have a humid continental climate and have four distinct weather. History of agriculture/horticulture is estimated to be 3000 BC old. The traditional recipes have a major role in maintaining daily dietary life even today. Kimchi is a unique traditional method to consume and store vegetables. During the recent years South Korea has made significant contributions in the field of horticulture at Global level. Institute of Korean Agricultural Science and Korean Society for Horticultural Science has played vital role in the development of horticulture. Korean scientists have made valuable contributions in development of new fruit cultivars, developing techniques for grafting of vegetables/cactus and popularization of green houses technologies.
