Abstract

Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk.) Sacc. is most important disease of oilseed brassicas. Control of this disease through chemicals is quite expensive and also not ecofriendly. Botanical pesticides are one of the vital components of Integrated Pest Management Programme. Evaluation of some plant extracts was carried out against the Alternaria blight pathogen Alternaria brassicae under laboratory conditions. Plant extracts were prepared with the help of soxhlet assembly and methanol was used as a solvent. Botanical concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 % ware prepared by dissolving 0.5g, 1.0g, 2.0g and 5.0 g of plant extracts in 100 ml of sterilized distilled water. Poisoned food technique (plant extract amended PDA medium) was used to screen the different extracts in vitro; percent inhibition in radial growth, sporulation and spore germination was recorded. Euphobia leaf extract gave 100% reduction in growth at 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0% concentrations whereas, Rumax, Urtica and Eucalyptus, resulted 100% reduction in growth at 2.0% and 5.0% concentrations. Significant reduction in sporulation of the fungus was also observed in these plant extracts. At 0.5 concentration Euphorbia leaf extract was found highly effective and it gave 76.33% reduction of spore germination over check followed by Dryopteris (67.45%), Urtica (66.27%) and, Rumax (62.72%).
