Abstract

Introduction

Variations in the size and shape of the nose are more than those in any other body part of the human body. Nasal index varies in the indigenous states of India. The study was a cross-sectional study done in a tertiary care centre in Haryana to gauge the nasal index and compare it with the other states of India.

Material and Methods

200 subjects (100 males & 100 females) were randomly recruited from the general population of Haryana, over one year. Their nasal analysis was done by measuring nasal height & breadth. Later, the nasal index was calculated and data was inquired into.

Result

In Haryana, leptorrhine (moderately narrow) and mesorrhine (medium) noses occur predominantly. The mean nasal index of males and females of Haryana was 69.3 8.8 (Leptorrhine) & 63.8 6.7 (Leptorrhine) respectively.

Conclusion

It was also seen, that the nose type remains constant in inbreeding subpopulations. As such, calculating the nasal index can help us deduce an individual's ethnicity. This information can help us in medico-legal cases, by plastic surgeons in creating the ‘right’ noses, and by dysmorphologists.
