Abstract The discovery of magnetite ore near Pokphur in the Tuensang district of Nagaland has assumed special significance due to the presence of Chromium, Nickel and Cobalt in the ore body. The objective of present investigation is comprehend the kinetics and mechanism of multi - metallic magnetite ore reduction from liquid slags by solid carbon and carbon saturated iron. An hypothesis has been suggested for the reduction of iron oxide from the slag in slag - graphite and slag - metal - graphite systems. Two rate constants have been determined for simultaneous reaction at slag metal and slag - graphite interface. The maximum recovery of the metallic values was obtained with a particular type of slag at 1650°C.
