Abstract Osteoarthritis is a disease ofjoint characterised by erosive destmction of articular cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) on surface of diarthrotic joints. The specific enzymes involved in this process are matrix metalloproteinases, collagenase, gelatinase and aggrecinases. Cytokines and growth factors play in important role in pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. Interleukin-I (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) activats above degradative enzymes and promotes inflammatory response in joints.
