Abstract

The aqueous extracts of seven medicinal plants viz. neem (Azadirachta indica Linn.), tulsi (Ocimum sanctum Linn.), onion (Allium cepa Linn.), turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.), garlic (Allium sativum Linn.), harshringar (Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn.) and datura (Datura stramonium Linn.) were evaluated on two varieties (pusa purple long and pusa purple round) of brinjal fruits infested with Alternaria alternata, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum and Helminthosporium speciferum. Leaf extract of neem and turmeric was found to be most effective in controlling the disease development in both varieties of brinjal fruit. The leaf extracts of tulsi and garlic showed moderate effect as compared to onion, harshringar and datura, where loss in fruit was minimum and appearance of first disease symptom was also delayed. Extract of harshringar and datura showed poor results in controlling the fruit rot.
