The study of association between dermatoglyphics and blood groups system in Konkan region of Maharashtra

Abstract

Introduction

Fingerprints are impression of patterns formed by papillary or epidermal ridges of the fingerprints. The blood group classified into A, B, AB, O and Rh positive and Rh negative. The correlation of this fingerprint pattern in male and female with blood groups can be helpful in identification.

Methodology

Cross sectional study with consecutive sampling method was conducted at tertiary care center in Konkan region of Maharashtra on100 students (52 male and 48 female). The fingerprints of both right & left hand were collected by plain as well as rolled method. The details of the blood group of students were verified using college ID cards. Correlation between blood groups systems gender and fingerprint were analyzed.

Results

The study includes 52% male and 48% female. Loops were present in 16% ‘A’ positive cases, 2% ‘A’ negative cases, 11% ‘B’ positive cases, 2% ‘B’ negative cases, 8% ‘AB’ positive cases, 16% ‘O’ positive cases and 2% ‘O’ negative cases. Whorls were present in 6% ‘A’ positive cases, 6% ‘B’ positive cases, 2% ‘AB’ positive cases, 18% ‘O’ positive cases and 1% ‘O’ negative cases. Arches were present in 1% ‘A’ positive cases, 3% ‘B’ positive cases, 4% ‘O’ positive cases and 1% ‘O’ negative cases. Composites were present in 1% B positive cases.

Conclusion

It was concluded that, the fingerprint pattern is unique to each individual, blood groups and fingerprint pattern can be positively correlated for identification of person however studies with larger sample size is needed to give more emphasis.
