Abstract

On 04 -11- 2011 around 6.45 pm, the Vakola police got a call about an explosion near the Air India Colony on Kalina-Kurla road. At 7:00 pm Forensic science laboratory got call to visit at place of crime. Forensic team visited the place at 7:15 pm. It was found that the explosion took place in a wheelchair (for handicap person) at isolated area near Air India colony Santa Cruz (E), one handicapped person was injured due to explosion and crush injury was observed. From the place of crime one broken toy remote like electronic device, damaged and broken metallic container with electrical wire and circuit, metal pieces and polythene pieces were collected. Traces of gun powder like material was found in damaged metallic container. Chemical analysis revealed that remote control was used to detonate the low explosive mixture potassium nitrate, sulfur, aluminum powder i.e. gun powder. As explosion took place at in an isolated place like Air India Colony only two possibilities can be predicated -1) Bomber kept the bomb at the place to test the bomb explosion and explosion took place during testing, as the switch of remote control was ON and 2) Bomber kept the bomb at the place, the unknown person came and picks the remote, play with the switch and explosion took place. The chance of second possibility was less as compared to first one because the person was handicapped who pick up the remote.

The Above conclusion was drawn by forensic expert which helped the police to solve the mystery behind the blast. Police arrested a 22-year-old student who has assembled the explosive to take revenge on his lover's father as he had refused to accept him as his son - in- law. He made the bomb by removing gun powder from various firecrackers. The duo then fixed a helicopter (toy) motor to the bomb and connected it to a remote. He decided to test the bomb on the isolated patch in Kalina-Kurla road, but the bomb exploded on wheelchair of handicapped friend when he pressed the remote by mistake.
