Online published on 11 January, 2013. Abstract Underperformance is an act of exhibiting a level of performance that is below the standard set up for a particular role. When the ‘stimulants to perform better’ is not available or inadequate, the enthusiasm and passion for the job normally wanes and performance diminishes to bottom line. Authorities at the helm must diagnose the root of performance issues without prejudging the reasons and understand them in a most comprehensive manner. There are several of reasons for employees to perform poorly and to exhibit different approach to the job- personal and organizational Causes. Underperformance affects both the workplace and the employee concerned. Systematic and prompt handling of underperformance is important as the issue will have the potential to become more serious over a period. Authorities dealing with weak performers must have a long and hard consideration before arriving at such decisions and follow the ‘Hot Stove’ rule to administer them. A positive environment enhances the productivity with improved performance levels. Positivity is infectious; it elicits positive behavior and good energy easily spreads all around. Underperformance is a reality in many workplaces and has serious repercussions at times; yet, brooding over it leads to a complex situation. The most effective recourse would be to try to bounce back by effectively tackling the issue. Because people differ in their capabilities and conduct, ‘A one size fits all’ approach does little in addressing the issue and improving the performance to acceptable levels. A comprehensive approach and correct system to deal with underperformance is crucial, not only for organization but also for the individual employees.
