Abstract

The Research paper aims at understanding dimensions of urban poverty, the credit needs of the urban poor and the role of microcredit to economically empower urban poor women. The paper highlights the role of mahila urban co-operative banks in catering to the financially excluded segment of urban poor women and also how Mahila bank-SHG linkage can be a great vehicle of change. The paper indicates how the SEWA Bank, The Shatabdi Bank and the MannDeshi Bank have made valuable contributions in the field of microcredit to women through integrated services and Self-Help Groups. With little more regulatory support these mahila banks can tackle urban poverty in a better way.
