Active participation of women in SHGs leads to their prosperity as well as economic development. In this context, a study was conducted in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu to identify the factors responsible for the success of SHGs. Adopting multistage random sampling technique; data were collected from 180 respondents and analyzed by using Garrett ranking technique. The results of the analysis revealed that family support, self satisfaction, accessibility to credit, cooperative approach, social protection were the important factors responsible for the success of SHGs. Whereas, strict rules and regulations, ambiguity in leadership, difficulty in maintaining accounts, intra group conflicts and sub grouping were the major factors which hindered the success of SHG.
