S R Ranganathan: A Man of Great Vision and Inexhaustible Energy

1D J Foskett received his BA from Queen Mary College in 1939 and in 1954 his MA at Birkbeck, University of London. At the Institute of Education in London, he devised and implemented the London Education Classification Scheme. Was Director, Central Library Services, and University of London. Served as Librarian of the University of London Institute of Education, and had also worked in public library system. Was President of Library Association, UK, one of the founders of the Classification Research Group and member of Unesco’s International Advisory Committee on Libraries, Documentation and Archives. Undertook numerous missions for Unesco and the British Council in most parts of the world. He has taught at the Universities of Michigan, Ghana, Ibadan, and Iceland, and at the Brazilian Institute of Bibliography and Documentation. His books include ‘Classification and Indexing in the Social Sciences’ and ‘Pathways to Communication’.

Abstract

With the exception of Melvil Dewey, there is probably no librarian as widely known and universally admired as Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan. Informatics studies is happy to include in his honor a document from the archives of Dominican University of Illinois; an appreciation of his pioneering accomplishments, written by D J Foskett; a man who knew him very closely and participated in the advancement of his ideas.
