Dr. S.R. Ranganathan: A Commentary on S.R. Ranganathan's Five Laws of Library Science Takeuchi Satoru *The author Mr. Satoru Takeuchi is a retired library science professor in Japan. The book is a sort of guidebook to explain Dr. Ranganathan's library philosophy in a readable Japanese language for students and the Friends of the Library groups. It is composed of three parts: |
1. An abstract of the original text: It is not a full translation but the authors abridged version. |
2. Commentary on the text. |
3. Interpretation of Dr. Ranganathan's concept and brief introduction of his great achievements. |
The purpose of the book: Libraries in Japan in a modern sense have been developed since 1970's. Nowadays, the followers of Mammon are dominant everywhere and the libraries are regarded as 'no-income, money consuming organizations.' Responding to such a chaotic situation, we have to have a sound library philosophy based on Dr. Ranganathan's deep thought and ceaseless efforts over 50 years. |
When my draft is published, it will help encouraging Japanese librarians and local members of the Friends of the Library Group, and their activities will be vitalized. Though I have had no chance of seeing Dr. Ranganathan, I met Mr. Yogeshwar and Prof. Kaula, and told each of them about my long continued admiration of Dr. Ranganathan. In my draft, I did my best to introduce his philosophy, efforts and achievements. |
Mr. Takeuchi in his letter of 20th May 2010 writes: Mr. Ranganathan Yogeshwar kindly sent me his father.s portraits to add a distinguished feature to my book. By exchanging e-mails and letters he has given me important advices to complete this book. Without his kind help, I would not have been able to publish my book in this form |
