Abstract

A total of 8125 quarter milk samples from 2376 cows and buffaloes were subjected to bacteriological examination of which 4387 (53.99%) samples were found culturally positive. Both in cows and buffaloes, sub-clinical mastitis was found more prevalent than clinical form. Out of 4772 isolates obtained from infected quarters of cows and buffaloes, 60.05% were Staphylococcus spp., 22.96% were Streptococcus spp., 11.92% were E. coli, 1.76% were Diplococci, 1.47% were C. pyogenes, 0.34% were Klebsiella spp., 0.46% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 0.57% were Bacillus spp., 0.40% were Pasteurella multocida and 0.06% were fungi like yeast. As many as 8.7% quarters revealed mixed infections in different combinations. Most prevalent combination of isolates was Staphylococcus spp. + Streptococcus spp. In case of buffaloes while considering overall pattern, all Gram positive bacteria showed high sensitivity towards Chloramphenicol (90.67–100%) and Cefoperazone (77.37–92.30%). Almost similar sensitivity pattern was observed in cows except that cow isolates showed high sensitivity towards Ceftriaxone. Variation in antibiogram was observed in E.coli isolates.
