Online published on 2 April, 2016. Abstract The objectives of present work was to identify the causative microbes associated with canine pyometra and select antibacterial based on sensitivity testing along with surgical management. 20 Bitches were diagnosed positive for pyometra on basis of clinical, radiological, biochemical and ultrasonographic findings. Microbial isolation was undertaken from pus samples according to standard procedures followed by identification, biochemical and morphological evaluation. E. coli was the major isolates (50%) followed by Staphylococcus spp (28%) and mixed of both (22%). Ceftriaxone + Tazobactum (71.54%), Amikacin (61.54%) were the most sensitive against E. coli isolates, where as Staphylococcus spp. was sensitive to Linazolide (100%), Oxacillin (66.67%) and Sparfloxacin (66.67%). Multi drug resistant E. coli (predominantly) along with Staphylococcus spp. were the main causative organisms of pyometra. Use of Ceftriaxone + Tazobactum offered optimum benefit for pre and post operative coverage during surgical treatment by ovariohysterectomy.
