Abstract

The study was designed to evaluate therapeutic effect of Methylergometrine maleate on Puerperal event in Holstein Friesian (HF) crossbred cows. Total twelve (12) multiparous HF crossbred cows were selected and divided into two groups. Group-I was treated with Methylergometrine maleate intramuscularly and Group-II was treated as control and administered normal saline (placebo) intramuscularly immediately after parturition. The time required for expulsion of fetal membranes, uterine involution, occurrence of first postpartum estrus, service period, number of services per conception and conception rate were recorded for both groups. Early expulsion of placenta was observed in Group-I (3.47±0.23 hrs) as compared to Group-II (5.36±0.19 hrs). Time taken for completion of uterine involution was significantly shorter in group-I (25.67±0.88 days) than that of Group-II (37.67±1.31 days) and occurrence of first postpartum estrus was significantly shorter in Group-I (36.33±1.17 days) as compared to Group-II (36.33±1.17 days). While, service period was observed non significantly shorter in Group-I (79.20±8.51 days) as compared to Group-II (100.33±6.64), Number of services per conception was found non significantly lower in Group-I (20.0±0.45) Group-II (2.6±0.33) and conception rate was observed higher in Group-I (83.33%) as compared to Group-II (50%). Thus Methylergometrine maleate in postpartum cows accelerated the process of uterine involution, reduced time period of first postpartum estrus and induced early expulsion of fetal membranes.
