ABSTRACT A two-year-old male Labrador Retriever dog was presented with a history of anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, tenesmus, and abdominal distension. Clinical examination revealed a firm mass by abdominal palpation. Radiography revealed hypoechoic spherical mass in the abdominal cavity compressing the intestinal loops. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed spindle cells arranged in parallel alignment with malignant features and diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. Exploratory laparotomy under general anaesthesia revealed creamy-white, firm, encapsulated and roughly spherical mass originated from the mesentery of ileum. Mass was adhered with an anterior portion of ileum and its lumen was patent. Mass was removed in toto along with portion of mesentery and ileum. Histopathologically, tissue was highly cellular, eosinophilic and densely packed with atypical spindle shaped cells which were arranged in streams or as fascicles. Cells had high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. Cells showed eosinophilic cytoplasm, anisokaryosis, hyperchromatic nuclei and frequent mitotic figures. Based on the location and histopathological features, the case was diagnosed as mesenteric leiomyosarcoma of ileum which is rarely reported in dogs.
