ABSTRACT A male crossbred piglet aged 2.5 month old was presented for necropsy examination with history of sudden death. Grossly, cutaneous erythema in the ventral abdomen, joint swelling in the right foreleg. Marked congestion in lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, lymph nodes and brain indicating the septicemia. Histopathologically, suppurative bronchopneumonia, hepatitis, nephritis and meningitis were observed. The immunolabelling of S. suis antigen was observed intonsils, lungs and spleen. Bacteriological analysis from the heart blood and joint pus showed the pure growth of S. suis which further confirmed by a series of biochemical tests and molecular confirmation by targeting gdh gene. The S. suis isolated from joint pus and heart blood belonged to SS2 while the DNAs isolated from lungs and spleen showed the presence of both SS9 and SS7 serotypes. The isolates showed the presence of sly, epf, mrp and arc genes (sly+/ mrp+/ epf+/arcA+) confirming the virulence of SS. This is the first report of mixed infections of triple serotypes of S. suis in a piglet. Top Keywords: Multiplex PCR, Pathology, Pigs, Streptococcus suis, Triple serotypes, Virulence genes. Top |
