ABSTRACT

In the present study, a trial was conducted to assess the effect of 0.5 ppm ochratoxin A (OTA) toxicity on haematological parameters, bone marrow, trace elements and extra renal pathology in broiler birds and their response to powdered dry rhizome of Curcuma longa (CL) @ 2 gm/kg of poultry feed as additive containing 0.063 pg curcumin/g powdered rhizome of CL. No apparent clinical signs were observed in any of the experimental groups. Trace element study revealed significantly higher iron and manganese level in CL treated groups, while no significant alterations were found in OTA treated birds. On the contrary, zinc and copper levels were higher in OTA treated birds and lower in CL treated birds. Haematological study revealed neutrophilic and lymphocytic leucocytosis in OTA treated birds. This group also showed significantly reduced haemoglobin level. Bone marrow study showed higher Myeloid : Erythroid (M:E) ratio in OTA treated birds on 30th day. Prominent extra renal pathology include aneurysmal dilatation of right ventricular wall in OTA treated birds along with subendothelial oedema in atrioventricular valve. Vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes, bile duct hyperplasia, lymphoid cell depletion in the germinal centers of lymphoid follicles of Bursa of Fabricius was also observed. In Curcuma longa treated birds the severity of pathology was reduced, which is suggestive of partial ameliorating efficacy of CL against OTA toxicity.
