Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the acute toxic effects of dimethoate, using rabbits as mammalian model. Dimethoate @ 500 mg/Kg body weight (H’’LD50 dose) as single oral dose (TAFGOR containing 35.5% dimethoate) caused marked clinical changesand66% mortality within 24 hours. Prior to death rabbits showed recumbency, uneasiness and paddling of legs followed by unconsciousness. Except for significant decrease in PCV and increase in plasma globulin levels, the haemato-biochemical indices were not altered significantly. Pathomorphological alterations included generalized congestion, haemorrhages, and widespread degenerative changes, especially in liver, kidneys, and brain. Significant inflammatory changes were also observed. It was concluded that dimethoate was acutely toxic to rabbits causing widespread organ lesions.
