Abstract Chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis indicates tubular destruction and is evidenced by accumulation of interstitial fibroblasts, deposition of extracellular matrix, and loss of renal tubular epithelial cells. It is the most common form of kidney damage in older dogs. We reportd etection of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in the kidney of a dog diagnosed with chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis using immunohistochemistry. Alpha-SMA was detected in the interstitium, peri-glomerular and peri-tubular fibrotic areas and interstitial myofibroblasts while MMP-9 was detected in the peri-tubular and interstitial fibrotic areas as well as interstitial macrophagesin the kidney.
