Abstract An experiment was conducted with an objective to study the protective effect of Picrorrhiza kurroa on Ochratoxin A induced oxidative stress in chickens. A total of 90 day-old male broiler chicks were divided in to six groups (Tc, TDc, T1, T2, T3 and T4) of 15 birds in each. Birds of T group received Ochratoxin A @1ppm in the feed, birds of T2 group received Ochratoxin A @1ppm+ drug (PK) extract @400mg/kg of feed, T3 group received @2ppm of Ochratoxin A, birds of T4 group received Ochratoxin A @ 2ppm + herbal drug (PK) extract 400mg/kg of feed, whereas TDc and Tc groups were the drug control and control group respectively. The lipid peroxidation (MDA values) was increased significantly (P<0.05) in both the OA fed groups (T1 and T3), in the liver, kidney and blood, whereas the values were reduced significantly in the T2 and T4 treatment groups which proves the effective performance of PK extract against lipid peroxidation. The SOD activity was decreased significantly (P<0.05) in both the OA fed groups (T4 and T3) in the liver, kidney and blood, whereas PK treated groups T2 and T4 showed a increase in SOD activity.
