Abstract

The aim of present study was to get a better insight to the prevalence of skin lesions specifically neoplasms in Indian horses. Out of the total 19 cases studied, squamous cell carcinoma and equine sarcoid were diagnosed in 8 and 4 cases, respectively. The remaining cases were diagnosed as chronic inflammatory lesions, granuloma and necrotizing dermatitis. Ultrastructurally, sarcoid sample revealed presence of fibroblasts with pleomorphic nuclei and abundance of RER with dilated cisternae. All these samples were screened for Bovine papilloma virus-1, -2 and -13 and Equus caballus papilloma virus -2, -3 and -4. Seven samples showed positivity for both BPV-1 and -2 while 3 samples for BPV-2 alone. In the squamous cell carcinoma samples, immunohistochemical expression of connexin 26 was attempted and positivity was observed in 4 of the 6 samples which are considered more invasive and metastatic.
